ABOUT Fellow AMericans
“My Fellow Americans.”
These three words have been used by our leaders for decades — to bring us together, to rally our spirits, to call us to action. They’ve echoed around our living rooms, out of our radios and phones, and flashed across our televisions. They’ve been used to declare war and to put a man on the moon.
And today, they’ve never rung more hollow.
That’s because there doesn’t seem to be much American fellowship these days. Our politics have grown ugly. We don’t trust each other. We’ve turned inward. We’ve isolated ourselves — in our communities and online — seeking out only opinions that match our own. Our differences aren’t celebrated, but turned against us.
It’s a problem. And it’s bad. But it’s fixable.
Because it turns out, there are still things we all want — like clean water and breathable air for our kids and grandkids. Like fewer mass shootings in our schools and on our streets. We all have a common interest in not getting sick and being hung out to dry by insurance companies. A common interest in raising our kids right. A common interest in ending inequality. A common interest in knowing the truth — whether it validates our political beliefs or not. Because if the truth is gone, then everything else is, too.
Our division didn't happen by accident. There are people who benefit from driving us apart — who make the deliberate choice to stoke our distrust. And that's why coming together won't happen by accident, either.
It turns out that we’ve been bound together all along by a simple set of common values and human interests, whether we choose to see it or not.
So let’s choose to see it.
We’re Fellow Americans, and that’s what we believe in. Not both sides-ism. Not fake news. We believe in calling out wrongdoing when we see it. We believe in telling the truth. And we believe that the simple act of sharing things with each other can bring us together and change our country for the better.
We hope you’ll join us. It starts, simply, with a share.
See you out there.
